Lupta pentru Oscar la principalele categorii ale galei este foarte disputata si anul acesta, ducandu-se intre doua concepte cinematografice diferite. Pe de-o parte avem o superproductie, „Avatar” de James Cameron, film cu un buget si cu incasari record, in care se regasesc cele mai noi tehnologii de efecte speciale. De cealalta parte este un film independent, „The Hurt Locker”, de Kathryn Bigelow, fosta sotie a lui James Cameron, productie cu un buget infim prin comparatie si care incearca sa demonstreze ca mesajul transmis de un film este mai important decat ambalajul supersofisticat si colorat in care poate fi invelit acel film.
Cele doua filme au primit cate noua nominalizari fiecare si sunt concurente directe la cele mai importante categorii, cele ale Oscarurilor pentru cel mai bun film si respectiv pentru regie.
In cazul in care va primi Oscarul pentru regie, Kathryn Bigelow va avea un loc asigurat in istoria cinematografiei drept prima femeie ce obtine acest „Graal” al filmului. Regizoarea in varsta de 58 de ani, care a fost casatorita cu James Cameron intre 1989 si 1991, a primit deja premiul Sindicatului regizorilor americani si un premiu BAFTA.
Dintre celelalte filme nominalizate, doar bsi regizorul sau, nonconformistul Quentin Tarantino, ar putea constitui surpriza Galei Oscar de duminica seara.
